    Own Recognizance (OR) Release Explained

OR release lets defendants go home without paying bail. Here's who qualifies.

Own Recognizance release — usually called OR — means the defendant is released without posting bail, on a written promise to appear at all court dates.

    Who's eligible

Typically first-time offenders, misdemeanors, defendants with strong community ties, and those judged a low flight risk. Felonies and prior FTAs usually disqualify.

    How it's decided

An OR officer or judge reviews the case — employment, family ties, criminal history, and the seriousness of the charge — and makes a recommendation.

    What if it's denied

Cash bail or a surety bond is the path forward. A bondsman can post within hours.
