Each California county publishes a bail schedule — a list of default bail amounts for hundreds of charges. It lets the jail set bail without waking up a judge.
How it's used
When someone is arrested, the booking officer looks up the charge in the county schedule and sets bail at the listed amount. Bail can be posted immediately.
When a judge overrides it
For very serious charges, multiple charges, prior failures to appear, or holds, bail must be set by a judge at arraignment instead of the schedule.
Where to find it
Each county's superior court website publishes the current schedule. Amounts vary significantly by county.
