Arraignment is the defendant's first court appearance. It happens within 48 hours of arrest (excluding weekends and holidays).
What gets read
The judge reads the charges, advises the defendant of their constitutional rights, and asks for a plea.
The plea
Almost always 'not guilty' — even if you intend to plead guilty later. This buys time to talk with a defense attorney.
Bail decisions
If bail wasn't already set, it's set here. If it was, the defense can move for a reduction. The judge can also order OR release.
Next steps
A pretrial conference or preliminary hearing date is set, typically 2–6 weeks out.
