California allows three ways to post bail. Each has different costs, paperwork, and release speed.
Surety bond (bail bond)
Paid through a licensed bondsman. 10% non-refundable premium. Fastest release — under 2 hours from call to bond posted. The 95% solution.
Cash bond
Full bail amount paid to the court. Refundable at case end (60–90 days). Slow to post, slow to get back, but no premium loss.
Property bond
Equity in real property pledged in lieu of cash. Requires 150–200% of bail in equity, court-ordered appraisal, recorded lien. Takes 1–3 weeks to perfect.
When each makes sense
Surety: 95% of cases. Cash: if you have the full bail liquid and want it back. Property: large bails where you have equity but no cash.
