Los Angeles County operates the largest jail system in the United States — roughly 17,000 inmates spread across seven facilities, plus dozens of city police jails. Knowing which one your loved one is in changes everything about how fast you can get them out.
Men's Central Jail (Downtown LA)
The main intake jail for men. Most LAPD arrestees end up here within 12 hours. Release timing: 6–12 hours after bond acceptance. Slow but predictable.
Twin Towers Correctional Facility
Houses mental-health inmates and women (Lynwood is the other women's facility). Located next to Men's Central. Medical clearances slow releases here.
Century Regional Detention Facility (Lynwood)
Primary women's jail. Generally faster releases than the men's facilities — 4–8 hours.
Pitchess Detention Center (Castaic)
North County jail complex with four facilities. Used for sentenced inmates and overflow. Bond accepted but transports back to court can be slow.
City police jails
Beverly Hills, Pasadena, Burbank, Santa Monica, Long Beach and others operate their own jails. Releases are dramatically faster — often under 2 hours. If your loved one is still at a city jail, bond them out before they get transferred to LA County intake.
How to find an inmate
Use the LASD inmate locator at app4.lasd.org/iic. If they were just arrested, it can take 2–6 hours to appear in the system.
