A bail bond co-signer (legally called the "indemnitor") guarantees the defendant will appear in court. If the defendant skips, the co-signer is on the hook for the full bail amount.
Basic requirements
US citizen or legal resident, age 18+, valid government ID, verifiable income or assets, current address with proof (utility bill, lease, mortgage statement).
Credit check?
Sometimes. For bonds under $25,000, credit usually doesn't matter. Larger bonds may require credit verification or collateral.
Income guidelines
Rule of thumb: monthly income should cover at least the premium plus 25%. A $5,000 premium typically needs $6,250+/month verifiable income.
What disqualifies a co-signer
Active warrants, pending felony charges, recent bankruptcy without discharge, or being the alleged victim in the case.
Can a defendant co-sign their own bond?
Rarely. Most bondsmen require a separate indemnitor to ensure someone has skin in the game outside of jail.
Multiple co-signers
Allowed and often helpful. Multiple co-signers share liability and improve approval odds for larger bonds.
